CALLING ALL QUILT ARTISTS!
Folk Art Sisters of Sacramento (FASS) is currently seeking quilt artists residing in the United States, to participate in a juried exhibition entitled “THE AFRICAN AMERICAN ODYSSEY: Enslavement, Emancipation, Segregation (Jim Crow), Integration, Discrimination, Civil Rights, Assimilation, Freedom of Choice.”

FOLK ART SISTERS OF SACRAMENTO (FASS), co-founded by Gladys U. Wilburn and Marsha Carter is organized exclusively for:

  •  Encouraging, Educating, Preserving, and Promoting – BLACK FOLK ART QUILTING, depicting the African American historical and contemporary culture from the African diaspora.
  •  Encouraging – Inspire and support Black Folk Art Quilt Artists, and develop public understanding and appreciation of Black Folk Art Quilting.
  •  Educating – Raising the level of knowledge of the distinctive characteristics of Black Folk Art Quilting thru workshops, exhibitions, and educational activities.
  •  Preserving – Documenting and ensuring that Black Folk Art Quilting has a place in the tradition of art quilting for futurity.
  •  Promoting – Instilling a sense of pride in ourselves and our Black Folk Art Quilting heritage through community activities and the media.
  • BLACK FOLK ART QUILTING expresses the African American cultural identity in fabric. It conveys shared community values and aesthetics and pays homage to the African American’s trials, tribulations and triumphs for posterity.
  • This exhibition will showcase the skills of the artist and their ability to either tell their personal story as an African American or tell stories of the African American community’s long, eventful journey. The art work should be inspired by the exhibition theme “THE AFRICAN AMERICAN ODYSSEY: Enslavement, Emancipation, Segregation (Jim Crow), Integration, Discrimination, Civil Rights, Assimilation, Freedom of Choice”, and exemplify the African American historical and contemporary culture. (Please note: submitted works must be original work and suitable for all audiences, including pre-school children.)
  • Quilt artists may use many different processes to create their fabric artwork, including painting, dyeing, stamping, piecing, collage, printing, incorporating a photograph printed onto fabric, applique, embellishment, and other complex cloth processes. The final step should be the machine or hand stitching process through the layers of fabric (quilt sandwich.)
  • “BLACK FOLK ART QUILTING touches the past, present and the future.”
